Preface by the Dean

The Faculty of Humanities strives to be at the cutting edge of new research in the diversity of research focal areas covered by the its Schools of the Arts, Social Sciences and Languages, subdivided into academic departments, institutes centres and units.

Our research outputs consist mainly of publications by individuals, but also by teams of researchers in the form of articles in accredited journals and books published by reputable publishers.

Our aim is not only to increase the volume and quality of our research outputs, but also to get more lecturers involved in research and to give solid guidance to young researchers. Special emphasis is placed on constantly updating our academic offering with the latest research results in order to teach and enrich our students with the latest trends and insights into the respective academic fields.

The Faculty emphasizes a sound balance between the core activities of the lecturer, namely teaching, research, academic administration and community service.

The Faculty also strives towards substantially increasing publications from the research of successfully completed Masters and doctoral studies and to speed up the throughput rate of such higher degrees.

The Faculty’s capable and active Research Committee, Postgraduate Committee and the Research Proposal and Ethics Committee carefully monitor all aspects of research for academic excellence. The Faculty’s top researchers spend much of their valuable time on quality control and quality improvement activities. We believe that this is a worthwhile investment to obtain research results of increased quality.

Through its extended program of inviting top international scholars to present seminars at the University, the Faculty succeeds in exposing all lecturers to the expertise of these scholars.

A number of joint research projects have already resulted from this practice. Such increased international cooperation in research is beneficial to the Faculty’s international status. Being internationally competitive and locally relevant is still regarded as a prime research objective.
