Selected Highlights from Research Findings
Staff members at the Department of Ancient Languages decided to embark on a new research project, namely the interpretation of Daniel 3 in Biblical Hebrew, Qumran texts, Hellenistic literature, Syriac, Greek and Latin Patristics, and even Byzantine studies.
The project focused on the interpretation of Daniel 3 by people from different cultures, living in different geographical areas at different times. There are references to this remarkable tale about Daniels' friends who survived after being thrown into a burning furnace in all the texts that were studied. They also found that the interpretations varied in accordance with the geographical area, time frame and culture of the writers.
As a result of their research, six articles were published; entitled:
· Romanos Melodos: Kontakion 8 ‘on the three children’ by JH Barkhuizen;
· The interpretation of Daniel 3 in the Syriac commentary ascribed to Ephrem the Syrian by PJ Botha;
· St Jerome’s commentary on Daniel 3 by JPK Kritzenger;
· Daniel 3: intratextual perspectives and intertextual tradition by GTM Prinsloo;
· Chrysostom’s interpretation of the narrative of the three confessors in the fiery furnace by HF Stander;
· Divergences between the OG and Th versions of Daniel 3: Evidence of early Hellenistic interpretation of the narrative of the three young men in the furnace?
The articles were published in a journal, entitled Acta Patristica Et Byzantina, which is hosted by the Department of Ancient Languages.
