Preface by the Dean
This year proved to be an exciting one for the Faculty of Health Sciences. Not only did we manage to maintain a research output of more than 100 publication units for the year, but a number of vital public/private partnerships were also established in order to strengthen research capacity.
The School of Medicine hosts two MRC Units, which are functioning well. A considerable investment was made recently to establish a state of the art molecular laboratory to foster inter-departmental collaboration.
The School of Health Care Sciences is working on a number of innovative projects that vary from pressure relief for wheelchair users to health education of the Bafokeng.
The School of Health Systems and Public Health have also set their research priorities for the future and these include amongst other, areas such as chemical exposure and health, public health management of communicable diseases and multi-sectoral approaches to substance abuse.
The School of Dentistry has focused on early detection of oral cancer as well as smoking and oral health in adolescents in Limpopo province.
The faculty will set five-year objectives and strategies early in 2006 to ensure that we continue to produce the research needed to improve the health of all South Africans.
