Selected Highlights from Research Findings
Research was conducted to determine whether activity programmes could make a significant contribution to the quality of life of active senior citizens living in retirement villages and, if so, what types of activities should be implemented.
An additional aim of the study was to provide input regarding the needs of senior citizens to inform the design of training programmes for occupational therapy students.
Data for the study were collected by means of a comprehensive questionnaire that was distributed among residents of the Jakaranda Park Retirement Village, a privately managed facility in Pretoria.
Out of a total of 113 residents, 74 volunteered to participate in the survey. Based on the results of the survey, it was determined that residents of this particular retirement village do not experience any pressing needs, as they are still able to engage in many activities independently. It was therefore recommended that training programmes for occupational therapy students should rather focus on programmes for institutionalised and lower functioning senior citizens.
