Selected Highlights from Research Findings

The Department of Informatics launched a research project aimed at finding ways in which a particular way of thinking, together with web-based Group Systems Software, could enable citizens to access their human rights as provided for by the South African constitution. The project also looks at citizen participation in society by means of e-governance in general, not just accessing and exercising human rights, but actively participating in issues of governance and service delivery. To this end a new Decision Support/Usability laboratory was completed in 2005. One part of the study focused on awareness raising and training of ordinary citizens, administrators and managers and not so much on the Administrative Justice Act (AJA), or the necessary social practices (or particular thought processes) that support it. As a result of these findings, the researchers recommend the development of an information flow framework based on Sen’s Capabilities Approach in support of satisfying end-user requirements and in minimizing social and individual constraints on the implementation of the promotion of the AJA of South Africa.
