Molecular genetics of orbiviruses

Orbiviruses, including Bluetongue virus and African horsesickness virus, are insect-borne arboviruses causing diseases of economical importance in various vertebrate hosts. Although structure-function relationships of orbivirus proteins have been undertaken, many areas of orbivirus biology remain unclear, in particular, questions relating to the role of individual viral proteins in cell entry, replication and morphogenesis, as well as questions relating to how the virus and host proteins together orchestrate a successful infectious cycle. The aspects form the basis of this research programme.
