Chemical synthesis
Chemical synthesis of biologically active compounds and the development of chemical reaction processes: The tools of chemicals synthesis are used to prepare biologically active organic and bioinorganic compounds. The structures of these compounds are fully elucidated using NMR, other spectroscopic methods and crystallography where applicable. Molecular modelling, conformation analysis and computational methods of molecular design play a crucial role in these studies. The synthesised compounds are tested for biological activity through collaborations with the medical and biological sciences. Additionally, new synthetic methods are developed and tested for their generality, then applied to the synthesis of novel compounds. Outputs from the research will be useful to the medical field and to the field of chemical synthesis.
Chemical synthesis of useful metal containing compounds as catalysts and in material science: The same methodology of synthesis is followed, but the focus is on inorganic and organometallic complexes where the metals play an important role in determining the activity or properties of targeted compounds. Outputs from the research will be useful in material science and to the field of coordination chemistry
