Complete genome sequencing of a bacterial genome
Tropical and subtropical fruits harvested in South Africa are very susceptible to browning and rotting so they have a relatively short shelf life as fresh fruit. To tackle this problem the Post Harvest Innovation programme was launched in 2008 as a public-private initiative that provides funds for development and bringing to the country new effective and ecologically safe preparations for post-harvest disease control.
The bio-pesticide Fruktosporin has been developed and used in Ukraine. It is based on a live bacterial culture Bacillus subtilis ssp. subtilis 63Z deposited in the National Bacterial Collection of Ukraine in the Institute of Microbiology and Virology, Kiev, Ukraine under a catalogue number UCMB-5137. Sequencing of this strain will aid in development of a new biopreparation for South Africa and will provide us with valuable and important information about the evolution and adaptation of plant-associated Bacillus. The obtained results will be published in a joint publication
