Combating lifestyle diseases through the use of indigenous South African Foods

Functional biomolecules (eg. phenolic compounds and bioactive peptides) can act through various mechanisms in preventing chronic diseases of lifestyle such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and cancer. They can also potentially improve the immune system of immune-compromised individuals. Plant materials contain valuable functional biomolecules that can be exploited in novel and/or staple functional foods
