Mycolic acids are a family of cell wall waxes unique to Mycobacteria and some related genera, with various biological functions that relate to structure. They are explored for their role in establishing tuberculosis, their application to steer the immune response in auto-immunity and vaccines and in the rapid diagnosis of active TB, especially in HIV/TB co-infected individuals and children
