Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)

Augmentative and Alternative communication (AAC) refers to systems, aids strategies and techniques used to enhance the communication of people with little or no functional speech. These strategies include both unaided systems (gestures) and aided systems (graphic symbols and/or devices). Areas of investigation in this field of research are the implementation, effect and efficacy of AAC as well as implications for participation in the family, educational settings, the community and society at large are areas of investigation.
