Tissue Engineering

Tissue engineering is an emerging field that amongst others endeavours to address the question of how best to regenerate damaged tissue once disease or injury has occurred. Regeneration is the reconstruction of form and function of the injured or lost tissue. In attempting to recreate what was once formed during embryogenesis, combinations of signalling factors, e.g. growth factors (GF) and bone morhphogenetic proteins (BMPs), scaffolds, delivery systems and living cells, are utilised to seek a therapeutic potential. This in vivo experiment studies porcine BMP and heterotophic bone induction using allogeneic and xenogeneic collagen carriers
