The use of post mortem echocardiographic examination in the investigation of sudden unexpected deaths in infants.

A prospective study on cases admitted to the Pretoria Medico Legal Laboratory as SUD's (sudden unexpected death in infants). In view of the fact that routine macroscopic examination seldom provides a diagnosis in such cases, comprehensive futher examination is usually required, including microbiology, histology and toxicology. Recent research has shown that cardiac abnormalities may be implicatde in a number of these deaths. Accordingly, this study will seek to establish the value and use of performing more detailed cardiac examination, including the use of echocardiography.
