Smoking cessazation in tuberculosis patients
Tobacco use is responsible for an estimated 24% of deaths from tuberculosis (TB) in South Africa. TB patients who smoke have a higher risk for adverse TB outcomes and other diseases caused by smoking. Introducing smoking cessation services for patients with tuberculosis has been identified by the World Health Organization as a priority, but to date very few controlled trials have established the efficacy of such an intervention. The study aims to determine the prevalence and patterns of tobacco use among Tshwane TB patients and the efficacy of brief motivational interviewing by lay counsellors on smoking cessation.
