Dental schools in SA should as a matter of urgency, take cognisance of the changing external environment. Decision-makers in dental schools should regain the initiative to become innovative leaders in order to ensure the training of skillful dental practitioners - empowered to create viable dental practices in a demanding and challenging external environment. Therefore, dental schools in SA should, as matter of urgency, revisit the following key issues if they wish to remain relevant in training a competitive and skillful dentist: (I) Do dental students receive training to develop adequate communication and treatment plan presentation skills to create a demand for comprehensive dentistry? (II) Do dental students receive adequate training in multidisciplinary clinical skills to practice comprehensive dentistry? (III) Are SA dental schools properly resourced and structured to ensure the implementation of a relevant curriculum? 8. Complaints against oral health workers at the HPCSA: Negligence and clinical incompetence as well as fraud were the most common complaints against dentists while fraud was the most common complaint against dental therapists. Training institutions must take note of these trends and adjust their curricula to focus on attitudes and behaviours that will foster professionalism. 9. Clinical correlates of oral malodour in a population of patients attending a preventive clinic in Pretoria, South Africa: A tongue coating, bleeding on probing, poor plaque control and periodontitis were independently associated with oral malodour. Daily flossing maybe effective to prevent oral malodour.
