Operations Research

"Operations Research makes the structure of its algebraic reasoning robust, in the face of an inevitable uncertainty in the values of the unknown parameters it has to emply". An OR model is a simplified representation of an operation or a process in which only the basic aspects or the most important features of a typical problem under investigation are considered. Constructing a model aids in putting the complexities and possible uncertainties attending a decision-making problem, into a logical framework amenable to comprehensive analysis. Such a model clarifies the decision alternatives, their anticipated effects, indicates the relevant data for analyzing the alternatives, and leads to informative conclusions. In short, the model is cyclic in arriving at a well-structured view of reality. There are models in each area of business, or industrial activity. A model which has the possibility of measuring observations may be called a quantitative model; a device or any tangible thing used for experimentation may represent a physical model.
