The influence of pregnancy on PFA-100 values

Pregnancy places extensive stress on the haematological system and the child birth process involves blood loss which could be fatal if not properly managed. Therefore, knowledge of the platelet function in pregnancy is very important. Previous methods of determining platelet function were bleeding time and platelet aggregation tests. These methods are substantiated with the new platelet function analyzer (PFA-100)?, which is sensitive and specific for platelet dysfunctions such as von Willebrand disease (vWD). It is designed to study the platelet function in vitro. It measures the adhesion of platelets to collagen under high shear stress and their aggregation with activation by either ADP or epinephrine.
