Selected Highlights from Research Findings

The research foci in the Department of Civil Engineering are geotechnical engineering, water resources engineering, structural engineering and transportation engineering. The Chair in Railway Engineering is associated with the department. Contributions were made by investigating the effects of principle stress rotation on permanent deformation in rail track foundations, the use of particle image velocitimetry track deflection measurements, the use of bubble plume induced destratification to reduce evaporation from open impoundments, the use of mathematics vs. pattern recognition in water resource studies, the potential application of nanotechnology in pavement engineering and the use of strontium aluminate/polymer composites as pavement material by establishing its luminescent properties and durability.
