Cross-cultural nursing focussed on the elderly
The overall aim of this qualitative South African/Swedish study was to identify the ageing process and the benefits concerning health, illness, and disease in elderly black rural South Africans and to show how it influences them in family and caring perspective. The findings of a collaborative research project on transcultural gerontological nursing care (UP and the Karolinska Institute, Sweden) resulted in a PhD thesis completed by Sharon Vasuthevan under the supervision of Prof Neltjie van Wyk (UP) and Prof Sirkka-Liissa Ekman (Karolinska Institute) in 2005. Doris Bohman, a student from the Karolinska Institute plan to submit her thesis that has also developed out of the project during 2006.
A continuation of the project that includes Digital Storytelling has been planned of which the first phase will be implemented during 2006. Stories related to health promotion are the focus.
The lecturers were responsible for 8 publications in accredited research journals and 11 international conference presentations that developed out of research finished in 2005. Although a variety of topics were addressed the primary focus is on the improvement of heath care.
