Emerging and Re-emerging viruses
In recent years various new viruses have emerged as human pathogens. Many of these have caused major epidemics such as SARS Coronavirus, West Nile Virus, Filoviruses (Ebola & Marburg). The high incidence of HIV in South Africa has resulted in various AIDS related viruses such as JC virus now emerging as disease causing pathogens.
