African buffalo. The genome-wide
data revealed substantially higher inbreeding in Addo buffalo than expected, a result which has increased the urgent need for conservation authorities to intervene to prevent
the negative effects of inbreeding depression from manifesting in the population.
The study is a good example of how genomic data can provide novel
and valuable information to assist conservation authorities in managing populations and species that are important contributors to South Africa’s biodiversity economy.
