A stem cross-section of a Ginkgo biloba branch. Ginkgo is one of four major lineages of non- flowering seed plants (gymnosperms) that separated from flowering plants over 350 million years ago. It is a valuable species for understanding the evolution of wood formation through studying its wood properties and expressed genes.
